I don't know about you, but something I wish I excelled at was styling hair! On a very rare occasion I can get something great going, but, otherwise it's back to the usual of straightening or doing some basic curls. (Insert emoji lady with shrugged shoulders here)
We recently worked with Danielle with Baroque Artistry on a photo shoot and I was blown away at her ability to transform our models' hair into beautiful styles!! I decided this was a GREAT opportunity to rack a hair stylists' brain with questions that some Brides may have. A little about Danielle: -How long have you been in the business? I have been doing hair for about a decade now! I left the salon in 2016 to start my company and it was the best decision I have ever made in my professional career. -What made you want to get into hair styling for weddings? I have always had a love for up-dos and working with brides. When I worked in the salon, I was always coming in early on my Saturday to accommodate brides and wedding parties. A few years in, I kept having clients ask if I would come on-site. There was a summer I had to turn down so many opportunities that I decided to pursue this passion and leave the salon life behind. -What is your favorite part of your job? I absolutely love doing hair and makeup. I enjoy the transformation and making others feel beautiful in their own way. I also just love everything about the wedding industry! I love the industry so much that my husband and I now run With a Twist, a wedding bartending service…hair by day, bartending by night! My dream is to open a venue someday but hair and makeup will always be my jam! -On a busy weekend, how many wedding hair styles could you do? I actually do both hair and makeup so I am usually multitasking. I like to set the hair, proceed with the makeup application, and then complete the wedding hair. I have a staff of amazing artisans so I never book myself more than one wedding on a given day because I believe in being truly present and I don’t think that is possible if I feel pressure to complete services in order to fill another obligation. Q&A: -What would you say are current trends in bridal and bridesmaid hair for 2018? Is it any different from 2017? We are still seeing a lot of the boho chic updos however, I am noticing a lot of brides wanting their hair more down and romantic this season. Extensions have always been very common with my brides but now, I have more brides than not incorporating extensions into their bridal look. -Is it common for all Bridesmaids to have the same hair style? Not at all. Bridesmaids rarely even have the same dress now! It is common for a request that the hair be all up-dos or down but the styles vary so much and I think that is great because we all have a comfort zone and want to feel beautiful! -What do you find to be the most popular hair style requested for Brides? This year, it is definitely that half up, very full, cascading long curled hair with a beautiful hairpiece! -I've always heard you shouldn't wash your hair the morning of the wedding...is this really true? NO! I tell all my brides to wash their hair the day off, put some sort of product in, and dry their hair completely. I think this is an old suggestion when looks were very sleek and dry shampoo wasn’t a thing. If I need more product in the hair to achieve a look, I rather be in control rather than at the mercy of oily hair. Plus, I don’t think a bride should have dirty hair on their wedding day! -Do some styles work better in certain hair types than others? Yes, it is so important to know what is achievable and what is not especially with Pinterest. I am very honest about expectation vs. reality. Luckily, people seem to be more aware of their hair type and knowledgeable about the limitations of their hair so it’s an easy conversation. The best part, today, with all of the products, hair forms, and extensions, there isn’t really anything we can’t find a solution for when it comes to hair! -In a typical updo, how many bobby pins are typically used? In all honesty, I try to incorporate some other techniques because a head full of bobby pins is uncomfortable and heavy. I believe there are better ways to secure the hair and I use bobby pins to do more of the refined placement of hair. -Should I get extensions? Can they be styled? I am the BIGGEST advocate for extensions so my opinion is completely biased. I have been wearing extensions since before I was even in the industry. In truth, extensions were the reason I became a stylist. I realized that I had been struggling for years with fine hair that I was never comfortable with and the moment I didn’t have that struggle anymore, it was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I finally felt beautiful on the outside! There are so many types of extensions and I could go on for days…I am like the Bubba Gump of extensions…there are tape-in extensions (my favorite!), micro-bead extensions, fusion extensions, sew-in extensions, clip-in extensions… LOL, you get the point. Some extensions hair can be reused and just require reapplication which are my favorite because it seems to be more affordable but also, it is for those who wish to have extensions as more of a commitment. If you desire extension for an event, clip-in extensions are the way to go but make sure they can be heat style. -What are some tips for ladies to help their hair style last through the entire day? If the hair is down, we use tighter curls that will fall throughout the day. If the hair is up, we pin and spray…then pin and spray some more! If the hair falls quickly, don’t be afraid to use a hair form. -If time is an issue the morning of the wedding, should there be more than one hair stylist on site? I typically always have 2 artists on-site…it is very rare that a wedding only requires one artist but Baroque Artistry also specializes in accommodating larger wedding parties. -Do you work with any preferred hair stylists or even makeup artists? Since Baroque Artistry has built such an amazing team of hair and makeup artisans that are team based and trained in a particular way, we tend to do both hair and makeup services as a company. However, if we are booked, there are so many amazing vendors in the industry that I refer brides to all the time. I think brides would be surprised to know how often we all work together…we definitely have each other’s back in this industry. Weddings are the most important day to our brides and we have a lot of pressure to make it perfect so we use each other for support. -How far in advance should a hair stylist be booked? I have brides that book over a year in advance and some that book months in advance. I would say 6 months to a year in advance would be ideal. I hope you find this blog as useful as I did! I'm a huge advocate of continued education. Was I a huge fan of college? Nope! But, now that I'm in a career (actually, two!) that I love, I find it incredibly valuable to keep learning every day to help expand my knowledge of this industry. Things change ALL. THE. TIME. Another Wedding Planner I know mentioned this workshop and it sparked my interest. I decided to sign up and I'm so happy that I did! The workshop was back in April at Loring Social and was organized by Jessica Wonders Events. The workshop was broken up into different sections based on your interests. There was a section for Wedding Planners, Florists and Photographers. The morning of the workshop was the educational part. Gretchen Culver of Rocket Science Events was our Mentor for the day. It was great to get tips and advice for everything from running a business, to best practices to designing! Another great part was to meet a few other Wedding Planners in the business. It's not always what you know, it's who you know! The second part of the day was the actual styled shoot. Each Planner had the opportunity to design their own tablescape based on a few key factors, just like it would be with real clients. We were able to pick the flowers we wanted (which were just designed by the floral group) and our work was photographed by the Photographers! This is always the fun part, making things pretty! Below I have some of the incredible photos done by Jeannie Marie Photography. Also, I'd like to give a shout out to all the amazing people who organized and also participated in this magical day!
